March 3, 2022
The Book Stop celebrated our first World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March 2022! Every year World Book Day trustees select 12 children’s books to be produced and published. These books are then bought by us and distributed to children in exchange for their World Book Day voucher. The mission is “to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.”
To mark the occasion we invited local schools to visit us in The Book Stop from the 2nd - 4th March. We were sure to stock our shelves with lots of World Book Day books that children could claim for free with a World Book Day voucher. Without a voucher these books cost just £1. On World Book Day itself, the team dressed up as book characters such as Gangsta Granny, Burglar Bill and Six Dinner Sid.
Whilst we are more than willing to host book fairs in schools and hold pop-up stands in other locations, we decided that introducing children to The Book Stop and giving them the experience of browsing, choosing and purchasing their own books would be the best way to celebrate World Book Day 2022. This is so that they would know where their brand new local book shop is, get excited about searching for and picking a book that sounds interesting to them, and to encourage them to revisit us or their local library in future. We were delighted to receive lots of lovely hand-made thank you cards from Queen’s Park primary school.
